Various Artists – Beats, Mines And Life: An Instrumental Journey [Album Stream]

To celebrate the many phenomenal instrumentals that have landed on our projects over the years, Coalmine Records is pleased to release of our first instrumental compilation, “Beats, Mines and Life: An Instrumental Journey”. The 14 tracks on here capture the brilliance of several of the producers we’ve worked with in recent years. These include numerous living legends who have carved out a massive niche in the game, including the likes of Nottz, Ayatollah, M-Phazes, and Khrysis. Also featured are the underground stalwarts like DJ Concept, Max I Million, J57, Small Professor, and Thelonious Martin, all of whom are cementing their place in the Hip-Hop world. The 50 minute “Journey” highlights both serious bangers and low-key headnodders alike. For the trunk-rattlers, we have joints like M-Phazes’ shimmering beat for Blu’s 2012 single, “Kiss The Sky”, in addition to his creeping “Midnight Madness” instrumental from Heltah Skeltah’s 2011 EP of the same name. Elsewhere, you’re bound to break your neck to Nottz’ “Atlantis” (off his “Titans in the Flesh” EP with Blu), chill along to J57’s dusty “The Art of Sole” (off Aaron Rose’s 2016 EP, “Elixir”), and feel the soul of Thelonious Martin’s “They Don’t Know” (off his 2017 released “Molotov” LP with Saga). Like many of our releases, “Beats, Mines and Life” pays homage to the Hip-Hop greats who have come before us. Of course, the title is a callback to A Tribe Called Quest’s classic 1996 LP, “Beats, Rhymes & Life”, and a tribute to the life and art

DJ Concept – RIP Prodigy (A Live Mix Of Dusty Infamous Originals) [Audio]

This past June 20, the world lost one of its most talented and influential voices of all time when Albert Johnson, better known as Prodigy, lost his life-long fight with sickle-cell anemia. And as we all learn how to cope with such a huge loss, artists like DJ Concept are dealing with P’s passing the only way they know how: by providing art that pays tribute to the rapper’s incredible legacy. For the Long Island, NY deejay/producer, this meant taking to his turntables and record collection to put together this brand-new mix, the fittingly titled “RIP Prodigy”. It’s a non-stop, 23-minute live mix that Concept recorded shortly after learning of the Queensbridge artist’s passing. It pays homage to the legendary emcee by showcasing many of the original samples that he rapped over, either as a solo artist or as one half of Mobb Deep. “It’s my homage to Prodigy and his soundscape, which was very influential to my sound as a producer,” Concept explains. “Banging joints like ‘The Realest,’ ‘Keep It Thoro,’ ‘HNIC’… I remember thinking, ‘This is the sound I wish I could make.’” “RIP Prodigy” kicks off with a chills-inducing a cappella recording of Prodigy rapping his opening bars of “Shook Ones Part II”. Then, you’re treated to more audio from P that pops up in between a slew of soul and funk originals that’ll leave you revisiting his and Mobb Deep’s catalogue all over again. #InfamousForever

Nature – Throw It Up (DJ Concept Remix) [Audio]

In the right hands, a remix is like a fresh coat of paint capable of breathing new life into an existing track. Proving that point is Long Island producer DJ Concept, who on his latest remix has completely overhauled the sound of Nature’s slept-on 2014 joint, “Throw It Up.” The original track, which appeared on ‘Seasons Changed: Winter Edition,’ featured the legendary Queensbridge rapper on his NYC-rap steez. That was thanks in part to Marco Polo, whose instrumental captured the grit and grime of Nature’s rhymes. But for Concept, there was more to the track than that. As you can hear on his remix, the producer transformed the song into a feel-good anthem with looping flutes and pianos, giving the track a sentimental and soulful vibe. So when Nature spits, “Feet firm on the ground, is the way I’m rooted/ Ni**as lovin’ what I’m doing, plus the way I do it,” it sounds less like bravado and more like a celebration. And just in case you’ve yet to peep Concept’s other projects from this year, be sure to check his collab album ‘Seventy Nine’ with Planet Asia, in addition to his uplifting instrumental tape, ‘Flight Patterns 2.’ Concept’s remix of “Throw It Up” is now available wherever music can be streamed.

DJ Concept – Flight Patterns 2 [Album Stream]

To say DJ Concept has been putting in work since the 2012 release of ‘Flight Patterns’ would be an understatement. From collaborations with the likes of Rome Clientel and Planet Asia to a series of solo projects, the Long Island-repping producer/deejay has been grinding nonstop. And that hustle continues with ‘Flight Patterns 2,’ a collection of sample-flipping slappers with a few choice features. As Concept tells it, the creation of the second ‘Flight Patterns’ occurred similarly to the first one, because (as he implies in the title) he created the project during a flight from JFK to PHX. The thing is, it almost didn’t even happen. “TSA made me miss my flight and made me late for my meeting so I was tight,” he recalls, adding that he was so pissed by the time he got to PHX that he didn’t listen to the music for months. When he did, though? “I was like, ‘Damn, these tracks are ill,’” he says, so he sequenced the album and hit up some guests. Those guests include fellow Long Islander John Jigg$ on the aptly titled “So Effortless”; his Dirt Disciples partner-in-rhyme Rome Clientel and singer B. Marshall on standout “The Looking Glass”; and Boston stalwart REKS on the equally smooth and off-kilter “Peep The Essence.” The remainder of the project is completely instrumental, however, there are some snippets of speeches peppered throughout to help tie the whole album together.” Beyond Concept’s sample flips and finely curated guest list, ‘Flight Patterns 2’ succeeds

DJ Concept feat. Rome Clientel & B. Marshall – The Looking Glass [Audio]

Four years removed from his acclaimed “Flight Patterns” instrumental tape, DJ Concept returns with a sequel filled with slappers, funk, and laid-back meditations. The lead single “The Looking Glass” falls into that chill, introspective category with guest vocals from his Dirt Disciples teammate, Rome Clientel and singer, B. Marshall. Marshall actually captures not just the vibe of the track, but Concept’s career in general when he croons on the hook, “My work is never done.” That’s because anyone following the Long Island producer/deejay knows dude must never sleep given his prolific output (do ya Googles). Although, who really wants him to catch any rest when he’s dropping heat like this? The same goes for Clientel, whose first verse is on some real, grown-man sh*t. In addition to being an ill preview of “Flight Patterns 2”, the track is head-noddin’ treat for fans of Concept and Clientel’s previous work. With that in mind, if you somehow snoozed on their 2015 release as Dirt Disciples, “The Ambition” EP, be sure to pick that up after you give “The Looking Glass” the listens it deserves. “The Looking Glass” is now available for stream, and as the debut instant-grat download off the iTunes pre-order for “Flight Patterns 2”, which drops August 18 through all major digital retailers via Crisis Center Collective.

Planet Asia & DJ Concept – International [Video]

Planet Asia may be “gettin’ bread all across the globe,” but the Fresno, Calif native hasn’t lost an ounce of perspective when it comes to his come-up and those who raised him. He also hasn’t lost the ability to kick back and reflect on life, something he enjoys here with Marvelous Mag, in the visuals for “International.” The smooth and reflective track stems from ‘Seventy Nine,’ Planet Asia’s collaborative LP with beatsmith, DJ Concept. And here, it soundtracks a well-deserved day off for the West Coast-hailing rapper, who chills at a local New York pizza spot with Mag and their crew. They also post overlooking the UN Building, which is only fitting given the track’s title. In between chowing down on slices and shooting the sh*t, Planet Asia reminisces on his younger days and how he’s graduated from the streets to selling out crowds on an international scale. It’s all captured by The Last American B-Boy of MonStar Films. ‘Seventy Nine,’ is available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited-edition gold vinyl, via Coalmine Records.

Planet Asia & DJ Concept – Seventy Nine [Album Stream]

Since debuting nearly 20 years ago, Planet Asia has continued to cement himself as one of the best to ever touch the mic. And that’s become especially apparent these past few years as the Fresno, Calif. rapper has dropped one distinguished project after the next. That trend only continues with ‘Seventy Nine,’ a tightly constructed and ambitious new concept album from Planet Asia and Long Island producer, DJ Concept. Their collective effort helped structure the framework heard throughout ‘Seventy Nine,’ which is that of a classic ‘79 Seville that narrates their journey. Each track crackles and fades into the next like you’re moving the radio dial, which allows for the smooth transitions within the album. The LP also demonstrates a balance of science and soul; “79” being the scientific number for gold (which has played an integral part of PA’s brand over the years), and Concept’s soulful production style. Both play a significant role in shaping the record, which also boasts an impressive lineup of guest features which include TriState, Marvelous Mag, Sean Price, Blu, Agallah, John Robinson, SmooVth, DJ Revolution, DJ Pain 1, and DJ Devastate. ‘Seventy Nine’ is out now via Coalmine Records, and is available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited edition gold vinyl through Fat Beats. *Album download card and 12″ insert included.

Planet Asia & DJ Concept feat. Marvelous Mag – International [Audio]

Like “Gold Vases” before it, Planet Asia and DJ Concept’s “International” is a testament to their determination as artists working to get what’s theirs. It’s also the soulful and catchy final leak off their collaborative LP, ‘Seventy Nine,’ which drops next Friday (3/25). The track gets an extra dose of soul from Brownsville, N.Y.’s Marvelous Mag, who captures the message of “International” on his sing-along hook: “And most of my ni**as is tryna get it ‘til the casket drops/ So my grind can’t stop.” For Planet Asia, being sedentary isn’t simply off the table, it’s clearly something he couldn’t even conceive. The West Coast emcee lives to create and provide for his loved ones, a combination that’s worried those closest to him in the past. “My nana pray I never see the paddy wagon/ Lot of us sent our kids to college off the sandwich baggin’,” he raps on the second verse, which also touches on his current success (“It’s all digital but I still sell a lot of physicals”). These reflective, personal moments are made that much more poignant over Concept’s beat, a sample-driven feast for the Boom bap heads out there. “International” is now available for download off the iTunes’ album pre-order of ‘Seventy Nine,’ which drops March 25th. The LP will be available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited-edition gold vinyl, via Coalmine Records.

Planet Asia & DJ Concept feat. Sean Price – The Festival [Audio]

Armed with bully raps, huge production, and a long list of quotables, Planet Asia and DJ Concept deliver their latest leak, “The Festival,” featuring DJ Devastate and the late Sean Price. The ‘Seventy Nine’ slapper bursts out of the gate with a verse from P that’ll remind you just how gifted he was as an emcee. His bravado was weighted by an amazing sense of humor, which he displays with bars like, “Ni**as said they ready to rob but they’re car in park/ Bullsh*ttin’/ Never excellin’, sellin’ wolf tickets.” It’s only right that Planet Asia follows suit, dishing out verbal darts like, “Ni**as mad ‘cause the b*tches on us/ We in and out the Ubers with the pistols on us.” Making the cipher complete is DJ Devastate, who uses his turntables to blend samples of Defari and the Alkaholiks with original lines from Planet Asia. It all makes for a massive track primed for festivals and tour shows alike, as P watches over with his trademark smirk. “The Festival” is now available for download off the iTunes’ album pre-order of ‘Seventy Nine.’ The album drops March 25th and will be available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited-edition gold vinyl, via Coalmine Records.

Planet Asia & DJ Concept – Gold Vases [Audio]

Planet Asia’s relentless work ethic has led to a number of noteworthy projects these past few years alone, and he’s getting ready to add another one to the list with the March 25th release of, ‘Seventy Nine.’ Proving that point is “Gold Vases,” the heavy debut leak off the album, which is produced entirely by Long Island’s DJ Concept. Concept’s piano-fueled, head-nodding backdrop is a low-key banger, which allows the Fresno, Calif. stalwart to spit his game which complements the gritty instrumental. Planet Asia uses his bars to big-up his affinity for gold and his hustler’s mentality, particularly on the hook: “I’m from the block so that’s what I reflect/ Keep rockin’ ‘til I get me a check/ It don’t stop, even when the millions is net.” It’s that never-ceasing hunger that’s made the West Coast rapper such a force from the beginning, and it’s clear that he’s only getting better with age. And it doesn’t hurt, of course, that he’s got Concept’s beats in his corner. “Gold Vases is now available for download off the iTunes’ album pre-order of ‘Seventy Nine.’ The album drops March 25th and will be available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited-edition gold vinyl, via Coalmine Records.

Dirt Disciples (Rome Clientel & DJ Concept) – The Ambition [EP]

When it comes to Hip-Hop, there’s something special about a project crafted by a duo. They’re typically tighter listens with a sharp focus and sense of cohesion. Those qualities are apparent throughout the latest EP from Dirt Disciples, aka the New York tag-team of rapper Rome Clientel and producer DJ Concept. Their new project, “The Ambition” EP, proves the old adage of “less is more” true on multiple levels, because these two know you don’t need an hour’s worth of content to get a point across. You may have already known that if you heard their ill self-titled 2014 EP, and they’re not shying away from the short-but-dope approach on here. The EP’s seven tracks glide by with ease, making for a listen that’s equally smooth and rugged. That goes for when Rome’s alone on the mic, particularly on standout “Rosetta Stone,” or joined by fellow underground bruisers like Torae, Chuuwee, and Rick Gonzalez (the latter two appear on single “Life is Good”). “The Ambition” EP is Hip-Hop in its purest form, from Rome’s confident and refined rhymes to Concept’s dusty and looping instrumentals. Here’s hoping they’ll keep their yearly releases going into 2016, because they’re only getting better with age.
