John Reilly – Rabbit Hole [Video]

Long Island rapper John Reilly makes passionate, eye-opening Hip-Hop that proves he’s not afraid to deal with issues we all face at some point in our lives. That’s what makes a track like “Rabbit Hole,” taken from his recently released ‘Standing In The Face Of Time’ EP, and its newly released video so important. The video is directed by T.D. Hoople, a New York cinematographer who’s previously worked with Eff Yoo, Diabolic, and Taboo, among others. And for “Rabbit Hole,” Hoople completely embraces the concept of actually facing your inner demons instead of running from them. Reilly plays the part of narrator, allowing his personal struggles with depression and loss to be portrayed by the video’s protagonist. As you’ll see in the visuals, the man is haunted by masked demons who seem to surround him at every turn. And it’s when he finally faces them that he realizes those beings, and the emotions they personify, were actually manifestations of himself that he must overcome. If not, he’ll just keep going down an emotional rabbit hole. Check out the visuals for “Rabbit Hole” and be sure to download ‘Standing In The Face Of Time,’ which is now available for free download via Bandcamp courtesy of Platformz Music, an indie label based out of Chicago.

John Reilly – Standing In The Face Of Time [EP]

It’s been a minute (or around four years) since the world last heard from Long Island-repping emcee, John Reilly. The thing is, it’s not as if he spent that time off with his feet up or even completely removed from music. Quite the opposite, as he’s been dealing with nearly everything life could throw at him: family issues, depression. fatherhood, and death. In spite of it all, he never stopped writing and instead used it as the inspiration for his stellar new EP, “Standing in the Face of Time”, with Chicago producer Rediculus. Reilly’s passion is clear from the jump on lead single “Do That Sh*t,” a track made for live shows and battle scenarios. But it’s on the gripping “Rabbit Hole” that he opens up overcoming his personal problems and not giving up: “Truly thought of quittin’ music after all this time and effort/ But, a writer’s who I am inside my very essence.” Not that he needed to, but Reilly more than backs up his writing abilities on “What Goes Around,” a tragic tale of abuse that centers on a woman named Jolene. In addition to detailing her difficulty escaping a hellish cycle, Reilly at one point embodies her cold abuser. It’s a harrowing, well-written listen that touches on the realities of domestic violence. Elsewhere, Reilly is more carefree, dropping hilarious Billy Madison references on “Bully Pulpit” while Rediculus supplies the lighthearted instrumental. They’re joined by New Jersey’s Rich Quick, who ends the track with a verse worthy

John Reilly feat. Rich Quick – Bully Pulpit [Audio]

Aside from the release of Deep Space Soul in 2012 as a part of The Day Laborers, John Reilly has kept relatively quiet on the music tip. While most fans expect (and demand) to hear music on a consistent basis, many fail to acknowledge that their favorite artists are human, and have to deal with personal issues on a daily basis. For John, he’s had to bear the weight of everything from death of loved ones, to fatherhood—while at the same time balancing time to focus on his main passion: creating relatable music for the masses. In November of 2015, the Long Island emcee announced the title of his new EP, “Standing in the Face of Time”, set to be produced entirely by Chicago-based producer Rediculus, bringing back the essence of a one-emcee, one-producer album—a rare commodity not seen in rap these days. This approach is a tried-and-true method which has proved effective since the golden age of Hip-Hop, lending a unique, overall cohesiveness to the project, while also showcasing the chemistry between the two artists—something that is seldom experienced on an album with multiple producers. With the release of his new EP fast approaching, John follows up the EP’s lead single, “Do That Shit” with the equally dope “Bully Pulpit” featuring New Jersey’s Rich Quick. Over Rediculus’ overtly funky production, John and Rich each spit boisterously from a place of authority about the pleasantries they experience while intimidating and berating kids on the school ground, with hilarious lines like

John Reilly (of Day Laborers) – Do That Shit [Audio x Download]

Long Island rapper John Reilly continues to strike out on his own with his slick-talking new single, “Do That Shit,” which is aimed squarely at the heads of all the wack emcees out there cluttering the airwaves. When he rhymes, “Grab the microphone and do that shit/ We’re tired of hearin’ rappers who can’t spit/ They gettin’ booed at quick!” on the hook, it’s hard not to imagine the hurt feelings of any rapper within listening distance. And anyone who takes it to heart will no doubt recognize that Reilly’s been doing this for a minute, as he was previously a member of celebrated underground outfit the Day Laborers. He’s focusing on his solo career now, though not without some help from a rising producer. “Do That Shit,” like the rest of Reilly’s upcoming EP, ‘Standing in the Face of Time,’ features an ill instrumental from Chicago’s Rediculus. His Boom bap roots are strong and evident on here, as it brings to mind the work of his biggest influences, particularly the Beatnuts. ‘Standing in the Face of Time,’ will soon be available for free download, courtesy of Platformz Records.
